Mathematical magicians

GLENHAZEL -Two Glenhazel pupils have made their mark in a national competition for budding maths pupils.

TWO pupils of Glenhazel Primary School have made their school proud after excelling in maths.

Maina Mungambu and Tebogo Masine finished in the top 200 out of roughly 32 000 entrants in the Horizon Mathematics Challenge.

Their maths teacher, Immanuel Dlamini, was smiling from ear to ear as he spoke about his pupils’ achievements. “This is my second time taking a team of two to the final,” he beamed.

“Last time it was two boys and now it’s a boy and a girl. I’m now thinking of forming a maths club to start them [pupils] as early as Grade 4 and 5.”

Dlamini said his proudest achievement as a teacher has been to see some of his pupils go to private schools and achieve scholarships based on their strong maths marks and achievements.

“I’ve seen some children make it in life. It’s pleasing to see them pass through your hands and they acknowledge that you helped them,” he said.

The maths challenge’s aim is to encourage an interest in maths for pupils from a young age. The competition, which began in 2000, sees pupils from grades 5 to 7 competing for prizes using their mathematical abilities. The challenge contains 30 multiple choice questions to be completed within 75 minutes.

“The greatest thing as a teacher [is] that I feel I am impacting the little ones to actually show there might be a future [for them],” concluded Dlamini.
