The actor was best known for his roles in Count Dracula, Count Dooku in Star Wars and most recently as the evil Saruman in the Lord of the Rings trilogy. He was knighted in 2009 for his service to drama and charity.
It is reported that he passed away while in hospital after suffering from heart and respiratory problems.
