Debate sparks learning

GLENHAZEL - ALTHOUGH limmud means to learn, which is the epitome of Jewish achievement and aspiration, it is more than simply 'to learn'.

Limmud is also an organisation which holds an annual conference in South Africa where Jews from all walks of life get together to learn and share ideas. It was in this spirit that a preliminary forum was held recently which focused on diversity in the Jewish community.

A private residence opened its doors in the spirit of Shavuot – the festival commemorating the giving of the Torah or Jewish bible. Speakers from a diverse swathe of Jewish experience shared their stories.

Two individuals, who renounced ‘orthodox’ Judaism, opened the discussion with the stories of their lives. They focused on how their new way of life is now perceived by their community. And in a community as

tightly-knit as that of the Jews, such a change in lifestyle often brings ridicule – as Josh Marcus so finely shared.

Questions were taken, with a spotlight on the challenges facing the South African Jewish community.

“Everything seems great, but you dig a little and there are huge divisions and I really think the community is toxic… in South Africa especially… Look around here, everyone is of the same demographic.”

The next discussion focused on a convert’s journey into Judaism almost two decades ago. Once again, issues of racism in the community were brought to light. But the overwhelmingly positive response by the audience was that the community should not condone divisive attitudes.
