Kirsty May Hall sets Flight

JOBURG - Kirsty May Hall is set to debut her newest collection, Flight, to the masses and to the pleasure of her adoring fans.

The Benoni-born sensation is no stranger to the world of arts, having received a Higher National Diploma in Fine Art from Wits University in the late 80s.

Instead of furthering her studies in the arts, she moved over to study nature conservation, but left shortly after she began in order to pursue a career in wildlife rehabilitation.

She travelled to a number of neighbouring countries to lend her hand to the wildlife and rear the furry creatures of the wild.

Having lived for so long among the animals, she found a certain passion for birds and even described herself as being inspired by them.

“Birds have taught me everything I need to know about living a good and meaningful life,” said Hall.

It is from this love and passion that she derived her subject matter for the exhibition – in addition to everything in her life having begun to revolve around birds, including her state of being.

She admires the way that they fly courageously, without the need of passports, and the freedom they have – with hope coming to the world on their wings, as she believes.

Hall is influenced by a number of factors and characteristics of art that transcend time, trends and barriers – much like birds do.

Hall’s other influences are nature, San rock art, bird flight mapping and Fibonacci sequencing.

The rock art influences are manifested in her placement of flat, graphic figures cut free from any unnecessary background.

Hall especially loves that nature is independent of human ideas of aesthetic beauty and so natural beauty is what she aims to convey to her audience with this exhibition.

Flight opens at the Toto Gallery on 23 July and will run until 24 August.
