10 000 water meters replaced

JOBURG - Johannesburg Water has embarked on a large project to install 10 000 meters and address problematic ones across the city over a period of six months.

Spokesperson for Johannesburg Water, Eleanor Mvimbela, explained that the objective of the contract was to ensure the effective and efficient metering of water being supplied to customers.

Mvimbela said, “Johannesburg Water recognises that when customers’ meters are in operational conditions at all times it will allow for accurate consumer consumption, monitoring and billing. Meter installation and maintenance will also assist Johannesburg Water to be able to record water flow data and improve the quality of the water demand and conservation strategy as well as the services it renders to the residents of the City of Johannesburg,” she said.

Entitled T-codes, the project aims to replace leaking/faulty meters and valves and to raise meters which have become buried.

Mvimbela responded to rumours that residents would have to pay double for their water due to the belief that their previous meters were not working. “All the meters that we are replacing are in working condition and have been read previously,” she said.

Mvimbela warned residents not to allow people into their homes without identification tags.

The following six contractors have been appointed: Bluestone Trench Technologies, F and A Civils, Letswamotse Civil Engineering, Mapitsi Civil Works, Sakhile Projects and MIS Pipelines.
