Unsuspecting woman disappears into hole in Sydenham

JOHANNESBURG - A WOMAN in her early 60s was walking down 9th Avenue in Sydenham on 23 May when she was offered a lift by a friend of hers who was passing by, and as she crossed the road she disappeared from view after she fell into a ditch in the pavement that was covered in leaves.

Carol Johnson said, “I was walking along the road when my friend drove past and offered me a lift. As I crossed, I fell into a ditch.”

According to Johnson, by her estimation the ditch was over 1 metredeep. “I have sustained injuries to my lower back and neck as a result of this. I do not know where to turn,” Johnson added.

Ward 72 councillor Steven Kruger said, “Service delivery from the City of Joburg and the Joburg Road Agency, in particular, have been poor over the past six months. Most of the issues were logged earlier in the year with the relevant bodies.”

Bertha Peters-Scheepers of the Johannesburg Roads Agency said, “We are investigating the situation of the pavements in Sydenham and the surrounding areas.”
