St Teresa’s young scientist heads for London

THE Minister of Science and Technology, Naledi Pandor, recently invited St Teresa's Grade 11 pupil Jenna Goosen to listen to her budget speech which she delivered earlier this year in Cape Town.

This invitation follows Goosen’s success at the Eskom Expo for Young Scientists International Science Fair in October 2014, where she presented a project involving a solar-powered electrostatic precipitator.

After presenting her project, Goosen was chosen to represent South Africa in London at the International Youth Science Forum (LIYSF) in July at Imperial College.

LIYSF is a two-week residential event held at the college, with lectures and demonstrations from leading scientists, as well as visits to industrial sites, research centres, scientific institutions and organisations, including world-class laboratories and universities.

The forum attracts over 400 of the world’s leading young scientists aged 17 to 21 from around 60 participating countries.

There is an active social calendar, and the scope of LIYSF extends further than broadening scientific understanding; it also engages students in education on other cultures and develop lasting, international friendships.
