VIDEO: Chaos in Kew

KEW - The loss of a female pedestrian's life had onlookers in shock after she was hit by a City Parks bakkie in Kew.

According to eyewitness accounts, a Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo (JCPZ) vehicle driven by an employee, swerved to avoid a blue Audi which jumped a red robot at the intersection of 11th Road and 2nd Avenue on 2 June.

The JCPZ driver then lost control of the vehicle, with a trailer attached, resulting in the death of a female pedestrian.

After a brief stop, the Audi continued down 11th Avenue, leaving its number plate lying among the bits of debris on the pavement.

Jenny Moodley, JCPZ spokesperson, extended the ‘heartfelt sympathies’ of her organisation ‘to the family of the deceased’.

“All City Parks and Zoo vehicles are fitted with tracking devices… as an intervention to combat driver negligence. These systems are closely monitored and non-compliance has [in the past] resulted in drivers being dismissed or… disciplined,” she said.

Metro police on the scene discovered a CV on the woman, suggesting that she had been looking for a job before her life was cut short.

Wayne Minnaar, spokesperson for Metro police, said a charge of culpable homicide will be opened against the offender.
