10 000 water meters to be replaced

GREENSIDE - A GREENSIDE resident has come forward to complain about her pavement being left in a state after contract workers replaced her water meter.

The resident, who wished to remain anonymous said, “The contract workers on the project were extremely rude and completely destroyed my plants, which I spent a fortune on.”

In response to her complaint, spokesperson for Johannesburg Water, Eleanor Mvimbela said, “Residents can rest assured that areas where work is conducted, will be reinstated to the state it was previously found in, and any new installation which is reported as being faulty will be repaired by the responsible contractor.”

Andrew Ramsay, senior contracts manager for MIS Pipelines said that they have before and after photos of all work they undertake.

“MIS Pipelines takes photographic evidence of each and every water meter before and after installation. This also includes paving, tar, concrete, plants, trees or any other obstacles or items which may be affected during replacement of the water meters, hence, we have such evidence that the plant in question of being destroyed, was actually neatly trimmed to allow for the installation of the new meter, as per the Johannesburg Water requirement,” he said.

Mvimbela explained that Johannesburg Water had embarked on a large project which aimed to replace 10 000 problematic meters across the city over a period of six months. Entitled T-Codes, the objective of the project was also to ensure the effective and efficient metering of water supplied to customers.

Mvimbela also responded to rumours that residents would have to pay double for their water due to the belief that their previous meters were not working. “All the meters that we are replacing are in working condition and have been read previously,” she said.

Mvimbela warned residents not to allow people into their homes without identification tags.

The following six contractors have been appointed: Bluestone Trench Technologies; F and A Civils; Letswamotse Civil Engineering; Mapitsi Civil Works; Sakhile Projects and MIS Pipelines.
