Schulbasar attracts thousands

MILPARK - MORE than 10 000 people attended the much-anticipated Schulbasar on 23 May at the Deutshe Internationale Schule (DSJ).

Shortstraw, an indie pop band based in Johannesburg, headlined the live entertainment on the day. The feedback from their performance was immensely positive.

The Dixie Hillbillies, who also performed, proved to be equally amazing.

Savo Ceprnich, marketing manager of the school said, “This year, we welcomed Savanna as the official sponsor of the beer tent area. They sold a variety of their products on the day.”

Now in its 108th year, the Schulbasar, popularly known as the beer festival, continues to be a social highlight in the Johannesburg social calendar. From food stalls to micro brewers, the event had something for both young and old.

“We pride ourselves on being able to offer something for everybody. Each class (from kindergarten to Grade 11) runs stalls; while we welcome selected external vendors. In total we had about 60 stalls/activities,” said Ceprnich.

Founded in 1890 by Pastor Herman Kuschke, DSJ will celebrate their 125th anniversary this year.

Ceprnich explained that the basar was the school’s biggest single fundraiser.
