Kingsmead College’s young author

MELROSE - At only 11 years old, Kingsmead College pupil Aammaarah Wadee has written her first book making her South Africa’s youngest author and accomplishing what many only get done after their 30s.

Inspired by Susannah Collins, author of the Hunger Games, Wadee said her book A Feather’s Tale was written in the same style.

“She [Collins] writes her book from the main character’s point of view and that’s how I wrote my book,” Wadee said.

The book, which chronicles a feather’s journey, starts when a feather becomes detached from its source, finding itself travelling throughout South Africa, meeting different people and seeing different places.

“It’s all about South Africa and I enjoyed writing it,” she said.

Aammaarah’s mom Kareema said, “My dad says she [Aammaarah] is very philosophical, and the book has deeper meaning.”

Wadee shares her success with her two siblings Mahdiyyah and Taskeen who assisted with the illustrations in the book.

According to the young author’s grandfather, Dr Khalid Ismail, the book reveals, “All humans are intertwined and that all human beings want to give and receive love.”

Wadee is quick to thank her school for their tremendous support and active participation.

Jenny Dugmore, head of junior primary and head of support at Kingsmead College said, “We are exceptionally proud of her and the fact that she is the youngest author in South Africa. Her delightful book, A Feather’s Tale originated from a creative writing lesson last year in Grade 5. Ammaarah’s love of South Africa, nature and her creative talent has been evident since Grade 0.”

Despite her extreme intelligence, confidence and ambition, Wadee is still a child at heart who enjoys sport and spending time with her friends and family.
