Union of Jewish Women hold 83rd AGM

HOUGHTON - The Union of Jewish Women (UJW) hosted its 83rd Annual General Meeting on 13 May at the Union of Jewish Women’s offices.

 

Chairman Diane Levine gave a comprehensive record of the successes of the past year around UJW’s ongoing projects including Kosher Mobile Meals, house and garden, adult education, sewing school, granny-headed households, Alexandra aftercare and feedings schemes.

Levine also mentioned the union’s upcoming events and projects which hold the promise of an exceptional and exciting year.

Donations of R40 000 each were given to Hatzolah and the Jewish Community Security Organisation in recognition of their superb, dedicated service to the community.

Bringing greetings from the South African Zionist Federation, Reeva Forman said, “The UJW fulfils so many mitzvoth (commandments) by welcoming the strangers into their tent.” She referred to the excellent outreach work done by the UJW. Guest speaker Judge Sharise Weiner gave a fascinating talk on xenophobia and the Jewish experience, and a delicious tea was enjoyed by the large audience.
