Kosher soup kitchen opens

ROUXVILLE - A kosher bi-weekly soup kitchen, Yad's Soup for the Soul has opened in Rouxville for families and community members who are in need.

The launch of the soup kitchen on 5 May warmed many souls ahead of the cold winter months.

Every week, NGO Yad Aharon and Michael sponsor more than 550 families in need with food boxes according to the size of the family. The NGO also provides locals with traditional and extra food for all up-and-coming Jewish holidays.

When Wendy Zinman, a volunteer at Yad Aharon and Michael heard that soup was about to simmer, she approached the organisation with a request to dedicate the soup kitchen to the memory of her late mom, Rhona Goldberg, and a month later Yad’s Soup for the Soul was launched.

At the launch, many people popped in to the soup kitchen at 21 Main Road to show their support, make donations and enjoy a cup of hot veggie soup along with a pie, compliments of the Pie Works.

The organisation’s project managers Mark Eilim and Jody Eberlin said the ultimate goal was to offer a balanced meal in a congenial ‘restaurant’ atmosphere, capturing the welcoming, comforting and compassionate ambiance which remains synonymous with the much-loved volunteers at the soup kitchen known as the ‘Yaddies’.

The concept of a soup kitchen certainly tugs at people’s heart strings, and donations from Jewish Joburgers have already been overwhelmingly positive. Yad Aharon and Michael is totally reliant on the donations it receives from individuals and businesses. This helps them sustain the various projects they are involved in.

The launch was sponsored by The Pie Works, BDP Trading Vegetables, Shulas and King David Linksfield High.

Yad Aharon appeals to everyone to get involved. There are many affordable options for those who wish to sponsor, ranging from the basic Sponsor-A-Cup for as little as R18 to Sponsor-A-Day for R1 800 a month.
