Wool, laughter and charity

JOBURG - The Union of Jewish Women (UJW) hosted 30 ladies for a fun night filled with art and laughter.

On 7 May Andy Cohen, a passionate art councillor, joined forces with UJW in creating a mural. The event, which was held at the Global House in Rosebank, focused on the use of art therapy combined with giving .

The theme of the evening was based on xenophobia and how it has affected everyday living among these women. Andy Cohen incorporated the use of art in her discussions. The women shared their experiences and feelings on xenophobia.

Cohen explained, “When art materials are engaged with in a therapeutic environment, the process may evoke different feeling states reflecting the unconscious forces that shape a person’s experiences.”

The women were divided into groups and were challenged to wool together a piece of artwork. The work from the four different groups was brought together at the end of the evening and a heart was formed from all the pieces.

The ladies discussed their experience with working with different people in their group, which also reflected diversity in the final outcome of the mural. Cohen spoke about using art to express oneself and find a new and invigorating ways to tackle a problem. This, together with giving, allowed these women an opportunity, not only to express themselves through art, but to give to those in need.

This event was one of a several the union plans to have. The mural will be donated to the Sunflower Ward at Our Parent’s Home in the northern suburbs.
