Jozi has a new roller-skating arena

MABONENG – It’s time to break out those old-school four wheeled roller skates … there’s a brand-spanking new roller-skating arena in town and it’s a sure-fire hotspot!

Introducing Rolling Cherry – Joburg’s latest and greatest entertainment addition. Owned by Diako Faith and Sizwe Sibeko, the roller-skating arena launched on 1 May and the event went off without a hitch.

“We enjoyed going to roller-skating arenas while we were back in London so we decided to open one in Johannesburg as there is nothing to do besides eat and drink, mainly, for Joburg residents,” Diako said. “The idea is that people can come roller skate, hire the karaoke room and enjoy the view from the rooftop.”

And enjoy it they did. Guests at the launch jumped at the chance to slip into a pair of skates and roll around the incredibly-spacious arena.

The floor is smooth for easy gliding and there are a number of very handy pillars available to grab onto while getting into the groove. Some of the guests even went as far as donning some ’70s-inspired outfits, singing the latest hits in the karaoke room and boogying down under the disco ball.

“Roller skating is a fun activity and it is good for one’s health. So we’re hoping to get Jo’burgers roller skating and hopefully more people take it up as a sport.” Diako added.

Although Diako says the arena is predominately aimed at people between the ages of 16 and 35, Sunday is family day and anyone is welcome. A roller-skating session is R100 and entrance to the karaoke room is R50.
