The ‘House of shame’

PARKHURST- PARKHURST residents have had enough of an abandoned house on the corner of 4th Avenue and 12th Street in Parkhurst.

The property, which is believed to belong to the Joburg Property Company, is in a shocking state, annoying residents who stay on the street.

One resident who wished to remain anonymous, said the house was a health and safety hazard. “The house is in a disgusting state and will most likely collapse one of these days,” said the resident.

The resident explained that the house had previously been guarded by security guards paid for by the Joburg Property Company, however, that had stopped, allegedly due to budgetary constraints.

Lilly Lee Brown, regional manager at Joburg Property Company, said they have advertised the proposal for sale and development.
According to Ward 117 councillor Tim Truluck, it will be the third time that the property is put up for tender.

Truluck said, “It is in a fantastic location, but is currently run down and now probably needs to be demolished as the city has allowed it to become run down over the past few years. I call it a rotten tooth in the suburb…”

Residents said their ongoing complaints about securing the abandoned house had fallen on deaf ears.

Joburg Property Company is yet to comment further.

Do you think that the abandoned house poses a threat to the area?
