Rejoice for Jabulani!

JOBURG - The new giraffe at the Joburg Zoo has been given a name.

JABULANI is the name that has been chosen for the young male giraffe at the Johannesburg Zoo.

In April, the Rosebank Killarney Gazette invited readers to suggest a name for the new young male who had been introduced to the herd of three females in the giraffe enclosure at the zoo.

Readers were largely enthusiastic with over 100 name suggestions, which the officials from Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo consulted and ultimately agreed that the name Jabulani was the most fitting. The name means rejoice in Zulu.

In this particular instance, there were several entrants who suggested the name Jabulani. Therefore in a special arrangement with the Johannesburg Zoo, the top three entrants who suggested the name Jabulani will all receive the prize.

Each winner will receive a prize of a picnic basket and four tickets to the zoo.

The competition winners are Debra Lynn Brenner, Krinisha Kara and Fatima Laher.

Some other names suggested by the readers included Longlife, Tall Horse; Frisky, Melman in reference to the movie Madagascar, and Shorty and Knobbles because of his knobbly knees.

What do you think of the new name that has been chosen for the young male giraffe?
