MELROSE - Benni McCarthy was robbed at gunpoint on 5 May in Melrose.

UPDATE: 6 May 2015, 9:30am –According to provincial spokesperson Katlego Mogale, The ex-Bafana Banana player, Benny Mccarthy was allegedly robbed at a shopping centre in Rosebank.

She said, “Yesterday afternoon at about 13h00 it is alleged that he had just came back from the airport and was at the barber shop. Three suspects, one armed with a firearm held all patrons at gunpoint. The one with the firearm went to the victim and stole his wrist watch, wedding ring and diamond earring. The suspects then fled in a black BMW with unknown registration. A case if armed robbery has been opened for investigation.”

Initial report: 5 May 2015, 9:30pm – Local soccer hero, Benni McCarthy, has become another statistic of crime after he was robbed at gunpoint earlier today in Melrose.

It has been reported that McCarthy was having his hair cut when three armed men approached him and robbed him of his valuables.

According to Eyewitness News, McCarthy’s manager, Percy Adams said that the robbers stole McCarthy’s watch, earrings and his wedding ring.

It is believed that the men pointed the gun at McCarthy’s face and kept telling him to hurry up, while some eye witnesses from the shop said that it was just McCarthy who had been targeted while other customers were ignored by the armed men.

Reports further state that no shots were fired and no one was injured and the men sped off from the scene in a black BMW.
