South African Book Fair returns

JOBURG - Literacy levels in South Africa have been recorded as being very low, but the national Spelling Bee, World Book Day and the South African Book Fair continually strive to change that.

Avid readers, often labelled as bookworms, are the people who use their minds and imaginations to experience the stories of others and escape to far away worlds between the pages of a novel.

Bookworms are not only dreamers; they also contribute significantly to the growth and development of the country by using their skills in practical ways.

The South African Book Fair 2015 Association of South Africa intends to inspire people through books by allowing them to read and discover books, discover authors and genres and most importantly discover your ‘Bookself’.

The South African Book Fair aims to not only showcase the works of big names and small names, but it also provides a platform for people to connect, engage and discuss books, authors and genres.

The fair, which has been running for nine years, will be available to the public from the historic Turbine Hall in Newtown.

Promising to bring the focus back to books and their authors, this year’s fair has planned an exciting literary programme that will feature book launches and signings, author interviews and discussions, poetry readings, literary workshops and forums, exhibitions and displays, and an exciting children’s zone.

This fair will offer quiet spaces for obsessive and in-depth reading, but also spaces for interaction with other book lovers to pick at each other’s thoughts and encourage the development of ideas.

With the theme of this year’s fair being Discover your Bookself, the fair promises to be a place to find your inner bookworm.

The South African Book Fair 2015 will run from 31 July to 2 August and everyone is encouraged to visit the Turbine Hall.
