Right to contest traffic fines

CRAIGHALL - LOCAL residents have voiced concern over what appears to be the issuing of unreasonable parking fines by the Metro police.

Situated along Jan Smuts Avenue on the stretch of road between Argyle and Waterfall avenues are several businesses.

A local resident has claimed that on 7 April, the Johannesburg Metro police issued several parking fines to vehicles parallel parked along the road outside the shops.

There are no yellow or red lines painted along the road, in addition to no obvious ‘no parking’ signs in the vicinity.

Furthermore, it is claimed that several businesses have been operating along the strip for several years, yet this is the first time parking fines have been issued to the establishments’ customers.

Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar from the Johannesburg Metro police said if a member of the public were of the view that the issuing of a fine was unjust, they can apply for the fine to be cancelled.

Minnaar stated that the request can be made in person at the Johannesburg Metro Police Department’s offices located at the corner of Loveday Street and Village Road. Or in writing to the address listed on the fine itself.
