City to throw centenarians a celebration

PARKHURST - CENTENARIANS were invited to a special celebration by the City of Johannesburg.

The special event was to celebrate senior citizens over the age of 100 and was held at the Walter Sisulu Community Hall in Randburg.

More than 800 centenarians attended the function hosted by Mayor Parks Tau.

Councillor Nonceba Molwele, member of the Mayoral Committee for Health and Social Development said the celebration was to honour the contribution made by the elderly to the growth of Johannesburg.

“They were born at a time when Johannesburg was only a mid-sized mining town, and they helped to make it grow into Africa’s largest

commercial centre and a global city,” she said.

The Rosebank Killarney Gazette featured the 103rd birthday of Parkhurst resident Olive Sutton last year.

Sutton currently lives under the care of her niece Vanessa Beukes. Beukes said she was aware of the centenarian celebration, but noted that her aunt was unable to attend.

“[She] is not able to go out anymore [and is] extremely frail now,” said Beukes.

She added that Sutton’s sight and hearing were also fading.

“But she is still bright in spirit and has a fairly good appetite, and likes to see the family and hear the news.”
