13-year-old star puts schoolwork first

JOBURG - A young poet who entered SA's Got Talent on a whim and won, is now well on her way to becoming one of South Africa's well-known starlets.

At only 13-years-old, Botlhale Boikanyo is beginning her career in the entertainment industry, but this young entertainer has a good head on her shoulders and promised herself that she will complete her degree before taking on a full-time career in the limelight.

Having started out on the road to her current and impending glamorous future by performing in a school concert, her potential was immediately recognised.

“I started poetry when I was in Grade 1,” Boikanyo explained.

“I was just a little girl and we did a school concert where my teacher gave me a poem and told me to know it by Monday and when I performed it, everyone saw my potential.”

Since winning the talent contest, the young star doesn’t feel that her life has changed significantly, but she admitted that she does have to allocate extra time for taking photos with fans when going to malls.

“When I’m at the mall with my friends I know that I will have to make at least 10 stops to take pictures and greet people, but it’s okay because these are the people who keep me going.”

A good role model for the youth Boikanyo makes sure to put her school work first – sometimes missing a few periods to do media appearances, but getting right back to classes afterwards and never missing a test or exam.

“My poetry doesn’t really affect my schooling career – if I have a gig I go to it for five minutes and come back – and if I have an exam then I just can’t make the gig.”

With her sights set on a degree in chartered accounting and her priorities in check, this young role model is bound to go far.
