Teacher empowerment

HOUGHTON - ORT South Africa's Skills and Enterprise Development Division has set their focus on working with individuals from disadvantaged communities. On 25 March, ORT SA hosted a press conference welcomed by the CEO of The ORT SA, Ariellah Rosenberg, various managers of ORT SA and beneficiaries.

ORT SA involves training models which include intensive classroom-based support. This year, ORT will celebrate eight years of work within Alexandra and Ivory Park High Schools. Their emphasis is on youth and training programmes that target young black entrepreneurs as well as Grade 10 and Grade 11 pupils. The ORT SA training model involves teacher training and intensive classroom-based support for teachers.

2014 ANA Maths results after the ORT SA intervention saw a 75 percent increase of some of the classes and an overall increase of 42 percent in schools were teachers received training.

The ORT SA Bidvest programme has been running in 12 primary schools in Alexandra since 2007, following the pupils into six Alexandra high schools with the same model of support. Mpho Matlala, Teach Empowerment manager said, “The aim of the programme is to support Grade 1 teachers in mathematics and in 2009 the programme progressed to Grade 2 teachers. In 2015, we implemented a programme at Grade 8 level,” said Mpho.

Ariellah Rosenberg says, ” [we] support the teachers, looking at ways to get directly to the children, through the use of technology.”
