Samro contributes towards 67 blankets campaign

BRAAMFONTEIN – The 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day campaign never stops giving to those in need and has indeed transcended the boundaries of gift giving.

The campaign that was founded by former actress Carolyn Steyn has become one of the most talked about initiatives since its inception one and a half years ago, and she divulges that it all happened on a whim.

After just nine months, the campaign beat out public favourites such as Coca Cola and Kellogg’s for the campaign of the year award.

This time it was the Southern African Music Rights Organisation (Samro) who implemented the initiative at their office in Braamfontein, where more than 40 men and women took part in knitting and crocheting blankets

The aim for the campaign is to make 21 000 blankets across the 15 countries in which they operate, to give them to those in need by 21 April.

Greg Zoghby, CFO at Samro explained that his secretary put the ball in motion for Samro to become a contributing organisation to 67 Blankets.

“My secretary, who is Koulla Norman, said she was going to start crocheting for 67 Blankets for Mandela Day, and she actually rallied the team. She got more and more people to join in the company and we ended up with about 45 people contributing, and even six individuals outside of the company.”

To date, the Samro team have made about 54 blankets, but with ample time until 21 April they’re be sure to meet their target.

Steyn, however, wants the world to know that this is an initiative that has no end date, because people should never stop helping those in need.

The campaign will showcase its efforts at the Union Buildings in Pretoria on 21 April, hopefully with 21 000 blankets covering the grounds.

Even Gautrain has come on board in support of the campaign by giving free train and bus rides to those attending the unveiling on 21 April.
