Stolen phone brings fame and friendship

JOBURG - Usually a stolen cellphone causes heartache, anger and the feeling of losing contact with the outside world, but Matt Stopera from New York City turned that around.

What began as an annoying situation that reflects the state of society where people feel entitled to help themselves to the belongings of others, turned into a story of finding friendship and fame through the power of social media.

Stopera, who was enjoying a beverage at his favourite bar, was the victim of cellphone theft.

On receiving a new iPhone and linking his accounts, he found that he was receiving selfies from his stolen phone of a man standing in front of orange trees, a man living in China.

After much discussion, Stopera and his friends concluded that the reason he was receiving these pictures was because his iCloud account was synced to both his new phone and the one that was stolen.

Instead of remaining angry over the incident, he decided to start a friendship with the new owner of his stolen phone. Months passed with the new owner, affectionately named Bro Orange, and Stopera engaging in daily conversations.

Without realising that he had found numerous followers in China, he flew across the world to meet him – and was inundated with fans and paparazzi.

His tour with Bro Orange made him an instant celeb overnight. This exciting journey has resulted in a documentary being made about Stopera, Bro Orange and the stolen iPhone.

After their time together and some lengthy conversations in their own pidgin, Stopera did indeed find out what happened to his phone and how it ended up with Bro Orange, in addition to seeing the face of the thief.
