Expected to be in full effect from the end of April, the programme will be part of the City’s attempts to lessen the great deal of congestion which takes place in the Sandton CBD every day.
The programme will see Sandton road users, who are not residents in the area, pay up to R250 to use the roads. And due to the safety risks, motorbike and scooter riders will be required to pay R400 monthly.
Road users will be required to buy a scan card at the Marlboro traffic department, which will allow the Metro police to keep track of the commuter’s payments.
The City explained this programme would act as a means to alleviate the high levels of traffic in the Sandton CBD and serve the public in a positive manner.
Ward 103 councillor Vincent Earp commended the programme as a way to relieve the gridlock in the area. He added, “It will deter commuters from travelling alone and also support the utilisation of the Johannesburg bus services. Or everyone can go green and ride bikes.”
As of yet, the Metro police have not released an official statement regarding the programme.
