Former South African tennis star Bob Hewitt convicted of rape

JOBURG - FORMER South African tennis star Bob Hewitt was found guilty of two counts of rape and one count of sexual assault on 23 March at the Palm Ridge High Court. Hewitt denied all charges brought against him.

Judge Bert Bam said, “The State’s evidence against the accused is overwhelming.”

The attacks were inflicted while coaching young girls in the ’80s and ’90s.

Hewitt is Australian-born and a former nine-time Grand Slam tennis doubles champion and a six Grand Slam mixed doubles champion of the ’60s and ’70s.
