Four arrested for impersonating police officers

JOBURG - FOUR suspects have been arrested for impersonating police officers by the Johannesburg Central Police at the corner of Jeppe and Von Weilligh streets in the Joburg CBD on 15 March at 12pm.

A tip-off was received by police that the suspects allegedly approached a 36-year-old and demanded to see her passport, upon failure to produce the document, the suspects then told the victim give them R200. The victim notified uniformed police and upon investigation, the suspects were

found to be in possession of a fake appointment certificate and police wallet.

Xoli Mbele of Johannesburg Central Police said, “The public needs to come forward if they are approached by suspicious characters pretending to be the police. We will do all in our power to bring them to book. . The police will not ask you for money upfront, the police will either issue a fine or detain you.”

Two males and two females were taken into custody and face charges of impersonating police officers and robbery.

The suspects are due to appear soon in the Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court soon.
