City Parks to install special ashbins to prevent damage to trees at Zoo Lake

PARKVIEW - TREES at Zoo Lake have been damaged by burning coal embers left by inattentive picnickers.

The Rosebank Killarney Gazette noted that there were several trees in the vicinity of Zoo Lake that had visible signs of damage at the base of their trunks due to residual braai ash.

This newspaper contacted City Parks which said its officials were aware of braai ash being discarded in the area. The utility explained that there had been braai ash bins placed in the park previously, but because these were made of metal they were often stolen and presumably sold for scrap.

However, City Parks indicated that newly designed braai ash bins were in the process of being rolled out.

Ward 117 councillor Tim Truluck said he was aware of the problem and had inquired in a written question to the Gauteng Legislature about the City’s plans on litter and braai ash waste management in Region B parks.

Members of the mayoral committee (MMC) responded and stated that the City was currently looking into utilising alternative materials such as concrete and brick for braai ash bins, with a design that included a water trap that would immediately extinguish coals and flames.

These new bins would be installed in strategic areas of the park with clear signage to accommodate users of the park.

Where do you usually discard your braai ash in a public park?
