Road closures for Freedom Ride on 22 March

ROSEBANK - FREEDOM ride Jozi will take place on 22 March resulting in road closures for several suburbs in the Rosebank Killarney Gazette's distribution area.

Ward 117 councillor Tim Truluck has noted that the councillors, residents and businesses in the affected areas had not been consulted, but despite this, Truluck was able to obtain general information regarding the race.

The race is expected to start at 7am at the Sandton Gautrain Station on Rivonia Road. It will then proceed in a clockwise direction to Alexandra.

Cyclists will pass through Houghton, Zoo Lake, Rosebank and then back to Sandton via Oxford and Rivonia roads.

According to Truluck, road closures will be rolling, and for most parts of the route, one side of the road will be open for traffic while the participating cyclists pass through. When the last group of cyclists have passed through the area, the road will be reopened to traffic.

Main roads included in the route are Oxford, Bolton and Chester roads; Cardigan and Lower Park drives; parts of Jan Smuts Avenue, as well as Lystanwold, Saxonwold, Cotswold and 11th avenues.

Truluck estimated that the cyclists could pass through the affected suburbs before noon on 22 March.

“If you work on 10 to 15km per hour, it should pass through Houghton and Saxonwold at about 8.30am, Rosebank by 9am and end in Sandton by 9.30 to 10am. Note that fast riders may do it in an hour and slow riders in three hours. It is quite a hill route. Residents inside the route in the Zoo Lake area (Saxonwold, Parkwood and East Greenside) [could] be trapped for about 60 to 90 minutes,” stated Truluck.
