Maths education for high school pupils in Braam

BRAAMFONTEIN – It was highly publicised news that towards the end of last year, South Africa's education system was ranked one of the worst in the world.

After severe criticism, an initiative was launched in Braamfontein to improve the maths skills of pupils, and with a link being found between maths skills and economic growth, it is expected that the latter will follow.

The start-up is called Brighter Future Tuition and it was developed by Siyavula, a Mark Shuttleworth Foundation beneficiary.

Brighter Future Tuition is a mobile platform that has combined mobile technology with tutoring and is expected to improve the maths marks of pupils by up to 14 percent in a few months.

Joanne Brink, CEO of Brighter Futures Tuition, explains that parents have growing concerns that without adequate maths marks, their children will suffer an unclear future with regards to their career choices, or lack thereof.

At the moment, there are six Brighter Future Tuition centres in Gauteng which allow tutoring to commence from only R50 an hour using advanced interactive technology on mobile phones.

There are already a number of people who have seen the results and reaped the rewards of joining the programme.

Joseph Makuwa is a Brighter Future Tuition entrepreneur who finished school in Springs and is currently completing his third year in Engineering at Wits University.

He began tutoring pupils through the programme last year and is pleased that he has been able to make a noticeable difference.

He explains that the technology that they use makes learning fun and encourages a brighter future.
