Big investment for substation upgrade

JOBURG - City of Johannesburg’s power utility City Power will invest more than R824 million to build a new substation in Kempton Park.

This is to increase capacity and strengthen power supply in one of the fastest growing areas in the city.

Member of the Mayoral Committee for Infrastructure Services and Environment, Matshidiso Mfikoe said the areas that would benefit from the multimillion rand infrastructure investment were Alexandra, Gresswold, Sandringham, Athol-Oaklands, Rosebank, Melrose, Parkhurst, Midrand and Modderfontein.

Mfikoe added that the timing was crucial as growth in the designated supply area had significantly increased without any upgrade of ageing power infrastructure being undertaken. She said the resultant high electricity demand led to the power grid in the area becoming constrained.

“The project is scheduled to be completed in December 2017,” she said. “The new substation is located near the Kelvin Power Station in Sebenza, Kempton Park and is aimed at improving the quality, reliability and capacity of power supply to the north eastern region of Johannesburg.”

Mfikoe said the new substation would allow City Power to construct new substations to relieve load on existing substations, and that this would allow the utility to carry out preventive maintenance with minimal outages. A similar project was being mooted for the south of Johannesburg.
