Corporate challenge for 67 Blankets

HOUGHTON - Cell C CEO Jose Dos Santos has called on big businesses to get behind the 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day initiative.

Dos Santos has specifically challenged other telecomm players to beat Cell C’s target of getting its staff to produce 1 200 blankets.

This year, the campaign wants to produce 21 000 blankets by 21 April and set a world record in the process.

In this 21st year of democracy, South Africans are encouraged to knit or crochet a blanket. These blankets will be spread across the lawns of the Union Buildings in Pretoria and around the Nelson Mandela statue before being donated to charity organisations around the country.

“This is not only a feel-good campaign, but it has also received international recognition as one of South Africa’s greatest projects in weaving together the fabric of the South African nation and keeping the legacy of the great Nelson Mandela alive. Everyone can take part. I am challenging all other businesses to get on board and encourage their staff to take part in what has become a global phenomenon,” said Dos Santos.

Schools throughout the country are also encouraged to take part and could share in more than R650 000 in cash prizes.

21 schools stand in line to win one of R21 000 prizes sponsored by Cell C. Carolyn Steyn, founder of the initiative, has also donated a cash prize of R210 000 in her personal capacity for the participating school who produces the most single bed-size blankets.
