Ready, set, sew

JOBURG - THE GREAT Sewing Marathon to be held by Thembalami Care Centre is preparing to snip, stitch and sew on 16 May.

The Rand Aid Association-run care centre in Lombardy East challenges those who have a sewing machine and some time to spare, to join them as they attempt to sew 1 000 single bed sheets and 1 000 pillow cases in one day.

Linen has been donated from various hotel groups but most of the sheets are for double beds, while the care centre has only single beds. Sewers are therefore invited to come for a morning of fun and fellowship as the pre-cut linen is hemmed to size. There are various prizes up for grabs, and interested people can enter the marathon individually or as a group of less than five people. All the linen is white, so white cotton is needed on the day.

Elize Raath, the centre’s manager said, “If you need cotton to be provided for you, this can be arranged.”

Entrants will be given lunch and refreshments and a great vibe is expected on the day which starts at 10am at the care centre. If you have a sewing machine and a few hours to spare, let Raath know before 11 May for catering purposes, and specify any dietary requirements.
