Zulu ritual on Wiliam Nicol Drive following taxi violence death
JOBURG - FOLLOWING the death of a taxi driver on William Nicol Drive a week ago, his peers gathered at the location of his death to collect his soul.
A number of taxis lined up to perform the ritual practices by African cultures.
Staff members at the nearby Shell Garage, who requested anonymity, spoke about how many Africans collect the soul of the person who died and take it back home. A staff member went on to say that if this is not done, accidents will keep occurring at the same location.
According to taxi drivers who attended the ritual, there is a taxi war between the Faraday and Alexandra taxi associations over taxi routes to Bryanston.
Wayne Minnaar said, “The incident is as a result of taxi violence, the matter is under investigation. We believe that taxi owners are fighting with each other over taxi routes.”
Ralph Jones of the South African National Taxi Council said taxi violence spoils leadership reputations, and issues can and should be sorted out in the boardroom.
