Because cupcakes are last season

JOBURG - It would appear donuts are fast becoming the new cupcake.

Although the sweet dessert has been around for centuries, it’s only recently moved its way up to becoming the new cake boss in town.

Donut bakers like Shehzaad Hassan of I Heart Donuts and Elise Suckerman of Dope Donuts plan on making doughnuts an essential for any party and are sure to make donuts stay popular for a while.

Hassan said he knew gourmet donuts would be a popular idea after he and his wife bought a few in Durban.

“People never eat the icing on the cupcake and when I had those gourmet cupcakes in Durban, my wife and I knew gourmet donuts could totally replace cupcakes,” he said.

With a shop based in Greenside and trading at 1Fox Market on weekends, Hassans said he has received a phenomenal response and the business is growing real fast.

“Donuts are the new best thing because cupcakes are so last season,” he said.

Suckerman concurs saying she started her donut business last year after working as a wedding planner and noticing that the uncommon requests many brides were making for their dessert tables.

“Chocolate, marshmallows and lollipops; anything was possible. So I could also create an item that could also be found on a dessert table but knew it had to be unique,” she said.

“Donuts have been in existence for centuries, but I found that I was able to make Dope Donuts stand out from the crowd by using unique and unusual donut toppings.”

Dope Donuts will be hosting a donut affair on 8 March at 31 Voorhout Street in Doornfontein, where those with a sweet teeth can indulge in dipping and decorating their own donuts.

“With this event, the aim is to basically allow the customer to dip their own donut and choose from chocolate, vanilla bean and raspberry glazes and six toppings,” she said.

If you’ve ever looked at a doughnut and thought, “If only it had more of that glaze” or perhaps, “this could do with more sprinkles” then this could be the event for you.
