Road issues in Craighall and Criaghall Park

CRAIGHALL PARK - The Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) has responded to concerns regarding several road issues in the suburbs of Craighall and Craighall Park.

The CraigPark residents’ association presented a list of road issues to the Rosebank Killarney Gazette, many of which have not been attended to, despite them being reported several times since last year.

JRA spokesperson Bertha Peters-Scheepers noted that many of the items on the list fell under capital expenditure projects.

“Certain roads [in Craighall and Craighall Park] have been identified for resurfacing or rehabilitation and reconstruction work,” said Peters-Scheepers.

“The Rehabilitation and Reconstruction Programme, as well as the ongoing Roads Resurfacing Programme, forms part of the agency’s 10-year Roads Development Plan to achieve targeted road conditions across the City by 2023.”

She said the agency had identified that over 27 percent of the 13 428km road network in Johannesburg had deteriorated to poor or very poor conditions.

Although no specific dates were given, several roads in Craighall Park had been confirmed by Peters-Scheepers as being scheduled for the current 2014-2015 road rehabilitation programme. Malborough, Hamilton, Buckingham and Rutland avenues, as well as a portion of Kent Road between Jan Smuts and Northumberland avenues.

While Somerset Avenue, Hume Road, Westminster and Abbey drives were scheduled for the 2015-2016 resurfacing programme.

Peters-Scheepers also provided feedback regarding the residents’ association’s concerns regarding the river bank erosion by the pedestrian bridge along Malborough Avenue.

“An engineer from our roads and storm water planning department will investigate the issue and based on the outcome of the investigation, the project will be prioritised and attended to,” she said.

Peters-Scheepers also indicated that the storm water drain collapse on the corner of Kent Road and Northumberland Avenue had been inspected and has been scheduled for repairs.

The Rosebank Killarney Gazette also provided reference numbers in relation to potholes along certain roads and the sinkhole on Rutland Avenue that has caused concern among residents.

At the time of the inquiry, Peters-Scheepers said, “The agency would like to apologise for any inconvenience caused. Buckingham and St. Albans roads will be repaired by 6 March and Rutland will be inspected and duly scheduled.”

Furthermore, Peters-Scheepers also highlighted that the South African Municipal Workers Union (Samwu) was currently on strike, however in light of this, the agency has put in contingency plans in place to hire external contractors.
