Encouraging sport and participation

LYNDHURST - Volleyball was played on the newly-built volleyball beach court at the Wedge Gardens Treatment Centre in Lyndhurst on 6 February.

The event was held in order to promote physical activity and a sense of belonging to a team for the participants.

These types of activities are held on a monthly basis whereby the public are welcome to join and have assistance from occupational therapists if need be.

The idea is to promote sport and to indicate to the public that sport is a good way to develop skills in order to communicate and soclialise in a healthy way. This initiative is to entice the public to participle in healthy activities.

Laetitia Goosen, deputy manager of the Rand Aid Association’s Wedge Gardens Treatment Centre said, “Meaningful activities are those activities which are appropriate to the client’s interests, gender, culture, chronological age, developmental age, roles and needs.”

The centre’s occupational therapists use meaningful activities in order to assess and treat their clients. The therapists specialise in a vast range of skills and holistically treat individuals.

Occupational therapy assesses individuals and uses treatment to develop, recover, work on maintaining daily life and better the skills of people with a physical, mental, or cognitive disorder. Occupational therapists focus much of their work on discovering and eradicating environmental barriers to independence.
