Nelson Mandela Foundation offers condolences to Sexwale family

HOUGHTON - The Nelson Mandela Foundation has expressed its condolences to the Sexwale family over the loss of their patriarch Frank Sexwale, who passed at the age of 97.

Frank Sexwale was the father of well-known businessman and cabinet minister Tokyo Sexwale.

Professor Njabulo Ndebele, chairman of the Nelson Mandela Foundation, said “Frank Sexwale was an admired soldier who fought against tyranny in WWII and continued his fight for freedom in his contribution to the successful defeat of the apartheid government. In his later years, he continued to serve his family and country in various roles with his wisdom and experience.”

The Nelson Mandela Foundation added that as Tokyo Sexwale is an integral member of the foundation, they shared in this great loss and wished to offer their strength and support to the Sexwale family.

Frank Sexwale was considered a long-standing member of the ANC.

However more controversially in 2012, the Sunday Times reported that Tokyo Sexwale made mention that his father Frank, told him to withdraw from cabinet, in response to the Marikana Massacre.

The family did not make public when Frank Sexwale passed, but his memory was honoured on 22 February at the SS Mendi Commemoration services at Avalon and Atteridgeville.
