It runs in the family

JOHANNESBURG - COUSINS Faizen Gani and Zameer Dada were crowned South Africa’s champion spellers after out-spelling more than 2 000 fellow competitors from six provinces at the Soweto Theatre.

In December last year, the top spellers from the provinces met at the Soweto Theatre to find the annual champion for the year.

This fantastic initiative was the brainchild of Ntsako Mkhabela.

“My motivation for starting this initiative is simple; I wanted to play my part in improving the level of literacy. More importantly, we need to instil a culture of reading at a young age,” explained Mkhabela.

Dada, who has now relocated to Johannesburg and attends St Johns College, is the 2014 Mzansi Spelling Bee South African senior champion – for spellers aged between 12 and14.

Gani and Reagile Rapoo from Thlabane West Primary School in Rustenburg were crowned the 2014 Mzansi Spelling Bee South African junior champions – for spellers aged between 9 and 11.

“The boys went head to head in the final round and after a chain of words that the boys spelled with ease, the judges decided to call a tie,” said Mkhabela.

The Mzansi Spelling Bee is a national spelling challenge spanning six provinces with thousands of children from private and public schools going head to head to out-spell each other.

The Mzansi Spelling Bee is now open for 2015 registrations and is open to all children between the ages of 9 and 14.
