Storytelling festival comes to South Africa

JOBURG - Sibikwa Storytelling Festival will bring history to life for all South Africans in March.

The world has been telling stories for as long as human life has existed – once in the form of paintings, then in the form of words and now in the form of performing art pieces.

This year the Sibikwa Storytelling Festival will celebrate the art of storytelling through performances and workshops, and finally ending in a storytelling competition on World Storytelling Day on 21 March.

The Sibikwa Storytelling Festival takes place from 10 March and celebrates 20 years of democracy, works towards social cohesion, promotes indigenous languages, gives a platform to sign language and builds national identity.

Festival-goers will experience histories, languages, cultures, and music in performances and workshops hosted by seasoned storytellers, musicians and clowns.

Performances and workshops will feature world-renowned storyteller Gcina Mhlophe, the legendary Pops Mohamed with Musical San Stories, Clowns Without Borders, Mime le Mot also known as Sibo Masondo, co-founder of Imisembe Yelanga Storytellers, Nonhlanhla Hadebe, multi-talented Mosoeu Ketlele of the Zanendaba Storytellers, Hlohonolo Dube from the Sibikwa Arts Centre and veteran storyteller Mpho Molikeng from Lesotho.

The Open Mic Sessions at the festival will be emceed by the Street Queen, also known as Ntsiki Mazwai.
