Police close down multimillion rand counterfeit goods trade

JOBURG - COUNTERFEIT goods worth millions were seized from a flats near the Johannesburg Noord Street taxi rank.

The joint operation included Gauteng Public Order Policing, Metro police and brand holders after customs officials, Metro police and other agencies embarked on a massive crime prevention and clean-up operation.

During the operation, police received a tip-off that there was an illegal trade operation in a block of flats.

When police arrived at the building, they discovered embroidery machines and materials to produce a variety of goods, as well as shoes and clothing. Nike, Puma, Converse and Adidas shoes, including many other famous brands of sneakers, were among the goods recovered worth millions of rand.

Four foreign nationals were arrested during the operation. The suspects are to appear in the Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court today facing charges of possession of, and possibly dealing in, counterfeit goods.
