Killarney sewerage under wraps

KILLARNEY - Johannesburg Water was recently forced to undertake emergency repair after a burst sewer pipe left raw sewerage running across the Killarney Country Club.

According to general manager of the club, Bruce Humphreys, Johannesburg Water has been coming to the area to fix the leakage on a daily basis. “It is messy work, and Johannesburg Water has been working on the problem,” said Humphreys.

Humphreys added that members of the club had also started to complain especially in the recent hot weather. “Many members have complained about the smell especially in this hot weather,” he said.

Johannesburg Water spokesperson Eleanor Mvimbela explained that the collapsed sewer outfall resulted from heavy floods that were experienced since January. “The damaged pipe is a 450mm diameter concrete pipe about 240m in length and the depth of the pipe varies (ranging from 2.5m up to 3.5m deep),” she said.

Mvimbela also advised that the reinstatement involved excavation works for launching pits, installation of 450mm diameter pipes (about 240m), and levelling and reinstating damaged grass among other procedures.

Humphreys confirmed that the work had already started the first week of February.

Johannesburg Water hopes to finish with the repairs in the first week of March.
