Cinema Nouveau to host Jozi Film Festival

JOBURG - For thousands of years, history has been passed down from generation to generation using the magic of stories.

The fourth annual Jozi Film Festival takes place from 19 to 22 February.

Cinema Nouveau announced it will host the popular festival over two of the days at its Rosebank Mall theatres.

This year Cinema Nouveau will screen a riveting line-up of eight films – four films on 21 February and four on 22 February.

A number of worthy submissions have been received this year that reflect a multi-genre slate of films from South Africa, USA, Namibia, Cyprus, India and Spain, to name a few.

The official launch of the festival at Cinema Nouveau will take place on 21 February at 8pm, with the premiere of Mommy, a multi award-winning film and Canada’s Best Foreign Language Film submission to the 2014 Academy Awards.

The film stars Anne Dorval as Diane Després, a widowed mother who is overwhelmed by the difficulty of raising her troubled, sometimes violent son Steve (Antoine Olivier Pilon) as a single parent. Després then begins to receive assistance and support from her mysterious new neighbour, Kyla (Suzanne Clément).

Directed by Xavier Dolan, the film has won multiple awards worldwide. Mommy will enjoy a wider cinematic release later in the year.

A South African film to be featured on 21 February will be The Two of Us / Thina Sobabili directed by Ernest Nkosi and starring Busisiwe Mtshali, Emmanuel Nkosinathi Gweva and Thato Dhladla among others.

The closing film on 22 February at Cinema Nouveau will be a feature-length documentary from the UK, Garnet’s Gold. Directed by Ed Perkins, the film tells the moving story of Garnet Frost as it journeys into the mind of a man searching for meaning – a search with which we can all empathise. This is a film about dreams, inspiration and the resonating power of hope.
