Acid attack victim forced to wait as case postponed

JOBURG -THE Johannesburg Magistrates' Court postponed the case of the alleged acid attack which took place in November 2014 in Sydenham to 11 March.

The accused, Jan Pieterse’s lawyer brought an application to court to argue Pieterse’s mental state. Pieterse is to be evaluated by a district surgeon to see if he is fit to stand trial.

Jan Pieterse allegedly threw acid at his ex-girlfiend, Ines Antonio, in front of their three-year-old daughter on a street in Sydenham in November 2014. Antonio sustained injuries to her face and chest.

The Court saw fit to deny Pieterse bail as he fled the scene after the alleged attack and was later arrested at his father’s home in Vereeniging. Their daughter also sustained minor injuries as a result of the attack, and her safety was deemed a concern.

Pieterse faces charges of attempted murder for allegedly throwing acid at Antonio.

Sergeant Nurse Sanyane of the Norwood Police Station said, “This was an unforgiving act. We will await for justice to be done.”
