Dubious officers allegedly extort foreign visitors

ROSEBANK - A ROSEBANK guesthouse owner has said that two of her overseas clients were allegedly coerced into bribing men claiming to be Johannesburg Metro Police Officers.

The alleged incident occurred at around 11pm on Oxford Road after the pair had left Melrose Arch where they had dinner on 11 February.

According to the guesthouse owner, her clients first drove through a police blockade and were allowed to pass through, however, moments later they were motioned to pull over by a blue light vehicle.

The clients claimed that two men then exited the vehicle wearing khaki uniforms, the men had guns and said that the license disk on the couple’s vehicle had expired.

When they were told that the car was a rental, the officers then allegedly accused the pair of drunk driving.

The driver was then allegedly told to get out of the car and sit in the backseat while one of the “officers” drove the vehicle to a nearby garage.

One of the overseas visitors was asked to withdraw R3 000 from an ATM at the garage, or else they would be arrested.

It is unclear if the perpetrators of this alleged incident were real or fake Metro officers.

In a similar incident on the same evening, eblockwatch founder Andre Snyman was also in the vicinity, and was pulled over as he left an establishment on the corner of Corlett Drive and Oxford Road.

Snyman said the policemen claimed to be from Sandton Police Station, though he did not get a chance to verify if their vehicle was marked as belonging to the Sandton police.

When Snyman told the officers he worked in an organisation that fought police corruption, the officers allegedly let him go.

“It’s opportunistic and sad if they were [trying to solicit a bribe],” he said.

Metro police spokesperson, Edna Mamonyane said that all Metro police officers have identity cards. “The card shows their photo, name and force number.”

Mamonyane said that the public could open a criminal case with the police and lodge a formal complaint with Metro police if they have been solicited for a bribe by a Metro police officer.

“There is no traffic fine that requires payment on the spot in cash,” she said.
