Zoo trot a blast for all

SAXONWORLD - Hundreds of people gathered at the Johannesburg Zoo to take part in the increasingly popular Zoo Trot which is now celebrating its tenth anniversary.

The trot occurs every second Sunday of the month and features a 5km or 10km walk or fun run.

The Zoo trot is an initiative of the Johannesburg City Parks and Johannesburg Zoo aimed at encouraging residents and City employees to stay in shape.

According to Matshidiso Mfikoe, Member of the Mayoral Committee for Infrastructure and Environment, the event is growing in leaps and bounds.

“The Zoo Trot aims to turn residents of Johannesburg into health-conscious individuals in a safe and controlled environment. This is a time for families to reconnect, unwind and get fit. It’s a win-win all the way,” she said.

The event caters for the whole family, and saw families take the opportunity to spend time with their loved ones, while others chose to have a picnic.

According to Joburg City Parks spokesperson Jenny Moodley, the route passes some of the most popular zoo animals such as the lions, elephants, giraffe, monkeys and one of most resilient animals; Phila, the Black Rhino.

The more adventurous chose to go on ferry rides to watch lions, rhinos, buffaloes and giraffes. Parents strolled around the zoo with their babies in prams or in hired ‘hippo’ cars.
