Sinkhole in Craighall Park frustrates residents

CRAIGHALL PARK - A sinkhole obstructing Rutland Avenue in Craighall Park is creating concern among local residents.

According to resident Luaan Hong, the sinkhole appeared outside her house last year and was first reported to the Johanesburg Roads Agency in October.

Several months have lapsed and there has been no assertive effort from the city to mend the sinkhole.

Hong noted that although there has been red tape and yellow bollard put around the hole, the city has not made any visible effort to fix it.

“We are concerned that water running into the hole [when it rains] is corroding our driveway, and the foundations of our house,” she said.

“It has sunk in and gotten bigger [over time].”

Hong explained that water gushes into the sinkhole and sprouts out the other end of her driveway.

Wendy McAlllister from the Craigpark Residents’ Association noted that several residents have reported the sinkhole to the agency, but to no avail.

“A lot of people use the road to access several schools [in the area],” she said.

Ward 90 councillor Anthony Still stated that although the agency is inundated, they should find a way of prioritising their cases.

According to the city’s service agreement’s turnaround times, the sinkhole should have been fixed within two weeks of the complaint being logged.

Still also acknowledged that the city would be liable, albeit a long process, if the foundations of the adjacent house was found to have been damaged as a result of the sinkhole.

The Rosebank Killarney Gazette is still awaiting comment from the Johannesburg Roads Agency.
