Accused denies murdering UJ professor

NORWOOD - ON TRIAL for the death of University of Johannesburg lecturer, Carl Mischke, accused Jacques Terreblanche testified in the South Gauteng High Court on 9 January that he would have done anything to prevent the death of Mischke at his home in Norwood in April 2013.

Terreblanche explained to the court that on the 9 January, co-accused Craig Thomas, who was formally sentenced to 20 years in prison for the murder in 2014, struck Mischke on the head with a dumbbell which ultimately ended his life.

Terreblanche claimed he had no idea that Thomas had planned to murder Mischke. He went on to explain that he only had the intention of stealing a few valuables from Mischke’s residence.

In his trial in 2014, Thomas claimed that Terreblanche had dealt the fatal blow with the dumbbell. In a statement made by Thomas, it is alleged Terreblanche and Thomas decided to rob and murder Mischke in order to provide them with funding for drugs.
