70th anniversary of the end of the Second World War

SAXONWOLD - THE Ditsong National Museum of military history recently received a donation of war diaries and campaign medals which belonged to E.B Dickinson popularly known as 'Dick'. Included in the donation was a publication by Dickinson entitled, From Jo’burg to Dresden – A World War Two Diary (Taffy and David Shearing (eds), Mossel Bay, 2010).

Set during the Second World War, Dickinson’s publication captures the drama of joining the second Battalion Transvaal Scottish in 1940 and going up north. After a year’s campaigning in North Africa, Dickinson was captured as a prisoner of war when the second South African Division surrendered at Tobruk in June 1942, explained Allan Sinclair, a curator at the museum.

“The story is told with humour and kindness and he comments on his fellow soldiers with humanity,” said Sinclair.

“The Museum is very fortunate to have received this material. There are many other such stories of experiences in the Second World War and most are, unfortunately, lost,” explained Sinclair.

This year is the 70th anniversary of the end of the Second World War and the museum appeals to anyone who has knowledge of any such stories or who knows of anyone who is a veteran of the war to contact the museum.

“It is important that these war experiences are preserved for generations,” added Sinclair.
